About

ThemeParks.ie is a gallery of some of the photographs I've taken while visiting amusement parks and fun fairs around the world. Trip reports and many more photographs can be found at my roller coaster pages.

Please note that all on-ride photographs have been taken with the permission of parks concerned.

St Patrick's Day Festival 2004
Dublin, Ireland

Travelling fairs exist all over the world, but Dublin is probably the only place in the world where rides are set up on main streets in the City Centre. Two midways are usually set up:

  • Custom House on the bank of the River Liffey. This is relatively easy to photograph because one need simply stand on the other side of the river.
  • Merrion Square in the south city centre. It is very difficult to get far enough back from the rides here, as they take up the entire roadway. What is not immediately obvious, though, is that Merrion Square is also the location of the Irish Government Buildings, which are to the right of the Ferris Wheel in the photograph below.
Severe traffic problems were caused by the Custom House midway at the festival this year, so it remains to be seen if these rides will reappear in future years.
